Click4garden FEBRUARY gardening
Your snowdrops should be peeping up by now. Did you know that 'Snowdrop’ doesn’t mean drop of snow but‘drop’ as in eardrop! There is an old rhyme that says ‘The snowdrop, in purest white array, first rears her head on Candlemas Day’ (which is 2nd February). If your snowdrops are too bunched up consider dividing them after flowering. We divide plants for a number of reasons; it not only promotes healthy growth as it prevents plants becoming too congested, but in the days of recessionista we can save money by not having to buy more plants! If you don’t need the separated plants then consider swapping with friends.
Our lawn is sodden; first the frost, then the snow and then the frost again. Do not walk on frosty or wet lawns and be reminded how bad they can get and consider a drainage project for the summer. Spiking lawns can be done to aid drainage. The other problem following frosts is the lifting of soil around the roots of plants. As soon as you are able you need to retread the soil back around the base of the plant. It’s time to turn your compost pile – this is a job that can be done while the winds whip around us and the lawns and beds are waterlogged! Do you like growing potatoes? Now is the time to get chitting! We suggest purchasing your seed potatoes from a reputable company as they can so often carry viruses. Chitting is the technique that encourages the seed potatoes to sprout indoors before planting. Place the potatoes in old egg boxes with the side with the most eyes pointing upwards; leave them in a light but cool and frost free place. Shoots will then start appearing and once they are 2-3 cms in length they are ready to go out – with a head start! Don’t forget the birds!
